Sprenger's rubber bits are made of soft, hard-wearing rubber with a steel core. Rubber generally has an "eraser effect", which is why it is important that the horse chews sufficiently with these bits. If the horse does not produce enough saliva flow, a rubber bit can be uncomfortable for the horse. Unlike a pure metal bit, there is a risk that the rubber can easily be bitten through if the bit is not buckled correctly and comes into contact with the teeth.
